Yes , I would like to improve my English skill
anyway I actually took a TOEIC exam and I took 735 . However I still deserve better score Please teach me how to get a practice for better score.
such as text books and so on .
1) Please search this site. There are several recommendedations here.
Dear Gen,
I am not sure I would recommend TOEIC textbooks at your level since to increase above 735 you have to use English quite a lot. If I were you I would read graded readers, watch films using DVD and the sound track on English, join internet mailing lists, or go and get a job abroad. Books are good for those at the lower levels I recommend:
『TOEIC Test 「

Hi, I'm just wondering if you could recommend any good textbooks for preparing for TOEIC exam. I'm in overseas at the moment and going to take TOEIC in December (not in Japan). Since I found it so hard to get materials for TOEIC here, I'm going to get some books from Japanese online store. So, that would be great if you can give me advice which taxtbooks I should look at for getting scores over 900-full marks. Thank you!
Posted by: Mina at 2005年10月25日 00:00Hi Mina,
When it comes to getting over 900 points, and judging by your english, I think that
1) First of all my students are a much lower level so I lack experience.
2) You are at a level where textbooks are not going to be much help. Instead I would recommend "graded readers" or "extensive reading." In other words, that you read a lot, of anything that you find interesting and can read.
An anecdote....
A man from a publisher of English textbooks came to our university and tried to sell textbooks to a colleague. My colleague asked, 'will these textbooks really help our students get a higher TOEIC score?' The man from the publisher said, 'That depends, on the students and teacher but, from our research, the books, the only method that has been reliably shown to help is extensive reading." The interesting thing is that the publisher that the man works for does not publish graded readers. So I believe him.
Read, read, read. If you can read books for natives, then that is the best. If you have to use a dictionary when you read books for natives then read graded readers.
Textbooks are good for people with a low score. When you get to the higher scores, then it is more a question of finding English materials (DVD, book, audio, and of course people) that are interesting to you, that you will communicate with. Reading is communicating. Watching a DVD is communicating. Interacting with people in English is communicating.
If you are interested in books at a lower level, then the book I recommend above is my best recommendation.
No, I have recently heard of a new book which analysese the words and phrases that are used in the TOEIC. I will try and find out the name of the book. It was called something like 「出るだけ。。。」 but I can remember the exact name.
Good luck Mina,
Tim
Dear Tim,
Thank you for such a nice advice. I totally agree with you saying that I should do a lot of readings. I'm currently studying at university and about to graduate in the end of this year. So fortunatelly, I've got heaps of stuff to read at the moment. I also love watching movies & TV and listening to the radio. Hopefully I can make use of such everyday practices for TOEIC exam.
I've actually got no idea what score I could possibly get, but I guess people (in Japanese companies) may expect that students who have been in overseas for a while should get at least 900. So I'll just do my best so that I won't get pathetic score...
I was searching for the book with the keywords of "TOEIC" and "出るだけ" on amazon.co.jp. Yet, I couldn't find that. I might get a book that you recommended or something like "TOEIC Test 900突破対策と問題" (found on amazon) just to get some ideas and clues to prepare for TOEIC effectively.
Posted by: Mina at 2005年10月25日 05:33Dear Mina
I think that you should have no problem but
1) Take a practice test. There are practice tests created by the TOEIC company called
2) The book you suggest will probably teach you the most difficult phrases (only?)
3) The book I recommend above is about basic strategy. I don't think that it will be much use to you but it does explain how the TOEIC questions work
『TOEIC Test 「
http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4770029616/250-2999209-6385801
4) The book our TOEIC guru recommends is
This is just an analysis of the words and phrase that appear most.
Hi Tim, I will probably get the one for the practice test and see how it goes. Then I might get the others later if I find it necessary.
Thank you so much for your advice!
