Tried reformatting using HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool available from Softpedia. The tool hung and could not be stopped with nothing happening.
Tried reformatting card using this tool but did not work (stuck at 75).
Just checking the disk using the "USB Disk Storage Format Tool 5.3" cured my SDcard's read only problem without having to format. Must install in all machines.
Sometimes toggling the protect switch and pushing the card into a card rather than USB read port seems to have worked [1]
